English Spelling Bee in the Islands of Panama

Posted: October 25, 2010 in Volunteer Journals

This morning, with the kids from the school on Isla Solarte, I attended an English competition for students in the Bocas del Toro region. Students from many of the different islands took part in a reading, dictation, spelling, singing, and a poem competition. One keen little girl from our group participated in three events, and won two of them! (not to mentioning placing in the third). During the awards ceremony they kept calling her up to receive more awards (which were big bags of presents), and each time they called her up she looked more embarrassed than the time before. In the end, she won so much stuff that she couldn’t even carry it and had to get a grown up-to help. The smile on her face was adorable.
